  • History of Capranica

Etruscan town, Capranica is situated above a tuff spur at the southern side of Lake Vico.

Petrarca, guest of Orso Anguillara, appreciated the waters with healing properties for the stomach and intestines.

Capranica was coveted by the Romans because of its strategic location close to Sutri and its wealth of water, therefore was soon conquered and became their garrison. In the tenth century Capranica was granted by Otto III to the monastery of Saints Alexis and Boniface on the Aventine, and over the years it became an important garrison of the Papal States.

It then underwent numerous invasions by the Lombards and Franks, by brigands and feudal lords troops who fought long possession with the Holy See.

Over the years the families of Anguillara and Vico took turns at the guide of Capranica, until the population made an act of devotion to the Pope, in return for exemptions and benefits.
