  • History of Oriolo Romano

Surrounded on its northeast side by the hill system of the Monti Sabatini, Oriolo Romano is the most southern town of the province of Viterbo. Ancient ruins identify its territory with that of the Roman Forum Clodii, while the current town dates back to the sixteenth century, when we begin to have some news about the history of the town.

In those years of Giorgio Santacroce, noble native of the actual Vejano, decided to give life to an agricultural community model founded on a perfect political organization and on an economical and urban planning, deforested and reclaimed the area. Santacroce then granted plots of land and gave the Vignola the task of giving a new urban order to the town.

Even today Oriolo Romano appears as one of the few examples of human settlement perfectly plannined in detail in its structure and in its spaces.

In the seventeenth century at the helm of the city took over the local Orsini family which followed that of Altieri.

Only in 1970, the center with its beautiful palace became the possession of the Italian State.
