The history of this country begins around the XI century, when the powerful Di Vico family, the officers Prefects of Rome, built a castle on a hill to control the plain of the Tiber, the place from which -it was feared- might come offensive attacks.
Isolated and clearly exposed, the residents living in the vicinity of the castle, constantly in fear of raids by soldiers, powerful families and domineering characters, asked (and obtained) permission to build their own
houses along the slope behind the castle. This of course favored the establishment of a real community.
The product was treated with so much excellence, that the city began to be referred to as the “canapina” par excellence. Hence the name "Canepina".
Around the year 1332 the castle of Canepina was given by the inhabitants of Viterbo to the Holy See, but this did not this compromise the relationship between the two towns. The Viterbeses infact then started with even more vehemently to demand their rights over Canepina.
In 1944 Canepina suffered an aerial bombardment by the allied forces that hit the town and took the lives of 115 people.
Over the years, thanks to the water wealth of the territory, the cultivation and production of hemp was particularly favored.
