Canepina

The village of hemp

  • Discover Canepina

Canepina is a small town of Tuscia, in the province of Viterbo, which is about 13 Km.

The town owes its name to the hemp plantations which invaded the surrounding area during the seventeenth century. Because of this, at frist its name was Canapina, later changed in the actual Canepina.

Canepina is located on the south side of Mount Cimino, known as the highest peak of the Cimini Mountains. The surrounding area is then quite hilly and is covered with chestnut, hazelnuts and olives trees.

The prosperity of these crops comes from the large presence of the waterways, including the Ripa ditch that crosses the country, flowing in the streets. Feature of the streets of Canepina is the road paving, done entirely with basaltic rocks. Its origins are lost in the past and the presence of noble families is underlined by the small-but-well made castle, surrounded by cylindrical towers.

The old town is a major point of reference for all those who enter the country in the autumn, which dedicated to the Chestnuts. The town's charm is also well represented by numerous wine cellars dug into the rock.

  • What to see in Canepina

  • History of Canepina

The history of this country begins around the XI century, when the powerful Di Vico family, the officers Prefects of Rome, built a castle on a hill to control the plain of the Tiber, the place from which -it was feared- might come offensive attacks.

Isolated and clearly exposed, the residents living in the vicinity of the castle, constantly in fear of raids by soldiers, powerful families and domineering characters, asked (and obtained) permission to build their own

houses along the slope behind the castle. This of course favored the establishment of a real community.

The product was treated with so much excellence, that the city began to be referred to as the “canapina” par excellence. Hence the name "Canepina".

Around the year 1332 the castle of Canepina was given by the inhabitants of Viterbo to the Holy See, but this did not this compromise the relationship between the two towns. The Viterbeses infact then started with even more vehemently to demand their rights over Canepina. In 1944 Canepina suffered an aerial bombardment by the allied forces that hit the town and took the lives of 115 people.

Over the years, thanks to the water wealth of the territory, the cultivation and production of hemp was particularly favored.
