  • History of Viterbo

The Viterbo area is very rich in history and art, largely related to the Etruscan and medieval era.

In Roman times the current area of Viterbo became, like many of the other surrounding territories, domain of Rome. In the VIII century it took the name of Castrum Viterbii and was fortified in 773 by Desiderio, King of the Lombards.

From this moment on Viterbo became the second stronghold of the Papacy, from which the epithet that still characterizes it today: City of the Popes. During the period of struggle between the Catholic Church and Empire, Viterbo became a free municipality and then, thanks to the Franks, it was included in the Papal State.

In 1164 Viterbo became permanent residence for the antiPope Pasquale III, who decided to use the militia of the city to carry out an attack against the Papacy of Rome.

Despite the great development that invested it during the late twelfth century and that made it become one of the most important centers of Italy, in 1207 the city was excommunicated because residence of the Popes considered heretics.

On this occasion, the Rome of the Papacy defeated the antipapal Viterbo.

Throughout the thirteenth century the government of Viterbo alternated the great families of the territory, such as Gatti and Di Vico. On this occasion the Popes Alexander IV and Urban IV chose it as their permanent residence. There were many other popes elected in Viterbo, among which Gregory IX, John XXI, Nicholas III and Martin IV.

The history of this city was thus always linked to that of the Papacy, until the advent of the Kingdom of Italy, when there was a gap and Viterbo took part in the entire history of Italy.
